OPENspace camp 2013

OPENspace camp 2013 took place 24th-28th July at the gallery and conference center Emmaus – galleri og kursuscenter. See photos at facebook here.

“This summer we open the doors to Emmaus, gallery and conference centre in Haslev (one hour from Copenhagen) to let ourselves be enrolled in the world of stories. Stories of faith, doubt, disappointment and hope. Stories that we carry with us and dream of making real and eternal. Stories in faces and life narratives, in music and meals, in playing with words and photo safari, in time and space. We will engage with poets holding up mirrors and prophets criticizing society, and we will reflect each others’ stories into artistic expressions.

The programme will contain talks, hands on workshops on writing, photography and dancing – you might choose to get a taste of an art form that you are not yet familiar with. We will also have time to enjoy stage performance and time to relax and hang out.

Some talks will be in English, and the rest will be translated into English simultaneously.

We strive to create a ’safe’ space with room for differences, for not feeling too artistic and for playing. You can draw back early or you can stay up half of the night.

The location consists of cosy rooms, good beds, fantastic food, lots of flowers and a huge lawn at Emmaus in Haslev, 10 minutes’ walk from the station.

So far OPENspace has gathered people from Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia, as well as some people from Europe, China and the States.

It will be possible to exhibit your own art work.”

Monique Sliedrecht is a Canadian painter living in Edinburgh. For years, she has been gathering and hosting musicians, visual artists, designers, film and theatre makers, writes etc. at ’Freswick Castle’ and at international conferences through the Wayfarer Trust (

Monique shared thoughts on ways that community/fellowship and the Christian faith can put the stories that we carry with us into perspective. Monique drew on her own experiences as a painter and as a hostess of art events gathering artists from different countries.

Anders Michael Hansen is a theologian and a pastor. He has been working with new expressions of church and worship in Denmark and internationally for many years. Anders Michael has a passion for encouraging and engaging artists and musicians in the aestetic and poetic expression of the church as well as recognizes the importance of Christian artists’ independent engagement in art making outside the church.

Anders Michael talked about ways that artists can be a voice of the church in culture and a voice of the surrounding culture in the church – and thereby be a ’profetic’ voice in both places. He stressed the synergy that can take place between the preaching and the poetic leadership in the church: ”Poetry and artistic expression is important because it speaks to heart, body, spirit and emotions, bypassing cognitive blockings. It gives Christianity credibility and sustainability in an existential sense.”

Visual artist Karsten Auerbach, communication consultant and poetry writer Anne Marie Andersen and sociologist and poetry writer Dorte Kappelgaard, the board members of OPENspace, contributed with brief talks as well.
